Explore SOU’s academic resources.
During their time here, students may find themselves needing some extra support to reach their full academic potential. SOU is full of people and resources to support a student’s academic growth and learning journey.
TRIO Student Support Services (TRIO-SSS)
Success at Southern/TRIO-SSS is a free program that serves low-income, first-generation students, and students with disabilities. Services include academic advising, tutoring, financial aid and scholarship advising, dedicated study space and tutoring center, and workshops and cultural events.
Disability Resources
The SOU Disability Resources office provides accommodations for students with disabilities and is a resource to all of SOU for creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment. Common accommodations include: testing accommodations, note-taking services, alternative textbook formats, assistive technology, housing accommodations, and sign language interpreters/captioning.
Tutoring Center at SOU
SOU is committed to providing academic support to its students. Operating under the Hannon Library, the Tutoring Center offers in-person and online appointments, as well as in-person drop-in assistance for Math, Science, and Writing skills.
Care Coordinators
Through the Dean of Students office, SOU’s Care Coordinators can offer a variety of academic-related support and resources. These can include explaining online processes like how to register or withdraw from a class, and consultation and advocacy with faculty should extenuating circumstances be impacting academics.
Common Registration Holds
Academic Advising
This hold means you need to meet with an advisor to discuss and plan courses for the term prior to registering. Once you complete a meeting with an advisor, they will remove the hold and allow you to register. If you are not sure who your advisor is, please contact your Student Success Coordinator.
Address Verification
This hold means SOU needs you to confirm your mailing address. Log in to Inside SOU and update your personal information. If your address is correct click “edit” and then “save” without making changes. If it is incorrect, “edit,” change it, then “save.” Once saved, the hold will be removed automatically.
Collections
A collections hold means that you have not made payments on your student account for multiple months and SOU has referred the debt to an external debt collections agency. A student will not be able to return to SOU until they have paid the collections agency the amount they owe in full. Once you have paid the debt, the company will notify SOU and you will be able to register again.
DH/Conduct
This hold is placed when a student has received sanctions via a conduct process and has not completed requirements. Should you see this hold, contact BOTH the Dean of Students at dos@sou.edu AND the Student Conduct Coordinator at studentconduct@sou.edu to discuss unfulfilled requirements and next steps for completing sanctions. Once completed, the hold will be removed and you will be allowed to register.
Measles
All students are required to receive the Measles and MMR vaccine or file for an exemption. If this hold is present, it means that the Student Health and Wellness Center has not received information about your vaccination dates or exemption request. To resolve this hold, log into the SOU Health Portal (can be accessed via Inside SOU home page) and confirm the dates you received your Measles/MMR vaccine. If you have not received it, are unsure of your date of vaccination, or wish to file an exemption, contact the Student Health Center to discuss next steps and options: 541.552.6136 or SHWCfeedback@sou.edu .
Revolving Charge Agreement
This hold is placed when a student has not completed the “revolving charge agreement” which is an online form stating the terms of payment plans should a student be unable to pay their balance in full each term. If you do not complete the form, the hold will be placed and prevent registration. It is removed when the student completes the online form located on Inside SOU.
Significant Balance
This hold means that your current student account balance is over the $6,000 threshold (continuing students) or $3,000 threshold (2024-2025 entry students). If a student owes more than $6,000/$3,000 to SOU, they will be unable to register until their balance is reduced to below the threshold. To remove this hold, make a payment or payments to your account until it gets to be below or contact the Student Accounts and Student Balances team for assistance.
